Been looking at this trilogy for awhile. Years, in fact.Although I love my Kindle, I prefer holding my books to read. And finding a used God blind cheaper than the downloaded version - I decided to finally give it a go.After 4 days, I literally just finished the novel. Hmmm, my thoughts on it?Overall, for a debut novel, Anna Stephens gave me a solid read. Never dull or boring, along with short chapters, Godblind sent me into one of my all-time favorite genres - Dark Fantasy.The pros: Stephens writing is visceral and character driven. World-building was meh. Typical medieval setting. Nothing unfortunately new here. No demons or monsters or fantasy tropes like elfs, centaurs, etc...And horses. I love horses, but why can't authors develop something fresh and new for humans to ride? So few fantasy authors do this. Shame.Character development was good, but for pretty barbarous type people, they came off as talking and acting like they were my neighbors. No, no, no...I usually hate heavy political intrigue in my fantasy. But Anna Stephens doesn't get carried away, and some of her best writing is in those scenes. Big reveals and surprises in those scenes were deftly done, and didn't beat me over the head with it.Action sequences were a mixed bag. For an author who says she holds a 4th Dan black belt - why in the neck didn't she utilize this knowledge in this bloody book?!The action sequences were sometimes hard to picture and awkward. Other times they were better. Read better. Definitely read worse.The use of gay people doesn't bother me. But there was ABSOLUTELY no reason to turn one of the main characters into a gay man in just a few chapters. No need to do this. It came off as forced, and wasn't believable at all. Added nothing to the story. Not only was it not needed, but felt like the author shoe horned this in, because it's now all the rave to throw in gay characters in out books, movies, and TV shows.I wish this author would have channeled her writing in creating new types of mounts to ride than typical horses, or fantasy creatures filling her forests and mountains of her world, instead of wasting it on changing a heterosexual character into a homosexual in just a few chapters.Overall, despite the various issues, Anna Stephens gave me an interesting, fast-paced novel. Very, very good for a 1st book. But whether it left me wanting to read the next two books....I dunno.Time will tell.
