In the late 1950’s and early 1960”s there was a an invention and revolution bubbling up out of the life form and jealous imagined lifestyle in Southern California… as viewed by the not entirely clear seeing world outside the… sun… beach… California Girls… surfer boys… woodies… surf and skate boards… hair color… clothing… and above and beyond the music! Names that became famous in that rambunctious culture… that is still famous today. An entire life inspiring culture… both real and imagined… fueled by Surf and Car Music. Besides the names like Jan and Dean… Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys… the Mama’s and Papa’s… the Byrd’s… Barry McGuire… Johnny Rivers… Nancy Sinatra… ( Along with “The Chairman of the Board” Sinatra… and even the infamous kidnapping of Frank Sinatra Jr. is tied into this surfing music true-life story!)This addictively educational and entertaining tome is penned by Joel Selvin whose unique combination of microscopically detailed facts and anecdotes… combined with the wonderful ability to get salient facts and accomplishments through to his readers in mere sentences… where less talented author’s would bog things down with multiple paragraphs. The fact that so many of these teenage and early twenty something kids attended the same schools such as University (Uni) High School… or Fairfax High School… Beverly Hills High School… Hollywood High School.. made these now famous personalities flutter in virtually the same evening mist… whether knowingly or unknowingly.And most of these kids were rich… spoiled… brats. Living in mansions in Bel Air and Beverly Hills… unless you were Brian Wilson being mentally abused by his Father in the Hawthorne-Inglewood area. Some of the many surprises the reader will come across are how dedicated and involved in all angles of the music business Jan Berry was… and he continued to be even while attending medical school at UCLA. The reader will be shocked out how duplicitous in almost every angle the music entertainment business is. Even if you already think it’s down and dirty you will be amazed. People stealing songs from each other… people steeling chords… harmonies… overdubs… everything. The producers… managers… and artists… make up phony names of already existing groups… have the original group (under the new fake group’s name) record a new hit… and then send a phony group (not the original group) out on the road to tour. Many times not even singing just lip synching!Another beautifully utilized “cherry-on-top” enticement continually employed by Selvin is mentioning small stuck in time hit songs such as “A THOUSAND STARS” by Kathy Young. That’s still a song that comes to mind when dreaming about an innocent young teenager dancing slow with a pretty girl he has watched from afar. The literary inclusion of songs and artists like this… in exactly the time period detailed… is just icing on this wonderfully crafted cake.This is just a wonderfully told… uniquely fact detailed… story that integrates all moving parts like a fine-tuned symphonic orchestra!
