This was a good book and a book that needed to be written and needed to be read. Unfortunately, the book suffers too much from the author's bias. I'm very liberal, but by the end of the book even I was rolling my eyes at the author's heart bleeding all over the pages. Look, were atrocities committed at Attica? - Undoubtably. Was there a cover up? - Certainly. Even after almost 50 years should there be a reckoning? - I think so. However, the author hopelessly glosses over the fact that a majority of these inmates were evil, hardened criminals. Sure, as she points out, there were a select few that were incarcerated for petty or racially motivated crimes, but Attica was where NYC stored its most violent, brutal offenders. Yet, every prisoner the author profiles is reformed, or was just caught up in circumstance. One inmate, convicted of two murders and arson (among other murders and crimes) in what amounts to a cross-state killing spree, has learned the error of his ways and is held up as a shining light with whom all of us should sympathize. The glossing over happens more than a few times - the profile goes into great deal how the prisoner was mistreated, page after page of atrocities, and when the author even bothers to fill us in on the offense that got the inmate locked up, its a few lines of glossed over text. The author would have you think the riot at Attica was just the work of a pesky, well meaning Boy Scout Troop. Now, did the inmates at Attica deserve to be gunned down in cold blood by a bunch of gun crazy cops? Absolutely not. However, the reason I will never be shot by a murdering Corrections Officer is that I am not a violent felon. Added to this, the author makes a point to describe how handsome or powerfully built some of the prisoners are; a distinction she doesn't share when profiling attorneys, cops, politicians, or others in the book, and it comes off as creepy.So the book is a good read, and raises some important question, but the outrage pouring off the pages gets tiresome after a few hundred pages.
