The thing that struck me the most while reading this book was the fact that while more than 25 years and with almost a total change of mission, the Army hasn't changed at all. I served after the fall of the Berlin Wall, but before 9/11, so I was in that odd "in-between" time where we had deployments like Panama and Desert Shield/Storm, and we fought a different enemy as well as being "pre-IED".That being said, the men & women in this book could have been members of my platoon in Saudi Arabia & Iraq for the Gulf war. We all had our quirks, most of us probably wouldn't hang around with the others in civilian life, and we all were totally dysfunctional as human beings, but we all came together to form a combat unit. We found ways to fill the hours of boredom, we fought, we pushed back on our leadership in such similar ways as portrayed in this book that I was immediately taken back to my time deployed.This isn't a story about valor or heroics, this is the story of the daily slog that so many of our men and women deal with every day in our seemingly never-ending wars. This story speaks to the internal challenges they face with sleep deprivation, toxic or inept leadership, poor facilities, limited information and "allies" that would just as soon kill you as help you.If you want to understand what our troops go through, read this. The vast majority of our troops don't serve a deployment that translates into a major motion picture. Most of them suffer through deployments like this.
